Introduction
Homesick portrays the unavoidable culture shock and homesickness for international students come from China. The game is inspired by designers’ personal experience as Chinese international students parting from their families and studying in US.
Background
Homesick is designed within 48 hours for participating Global Game Jam 2019, the world's largest game jam event taking place around the world at different physical locations. The theme for Global Game Jam 2019 is "What home means to you".

Level Design
In the beginning page of the game, the player, a Chinese girl, is separated from her parents. The screen is divided into two parts. One half the screen shows the girl living in the US, while the other half of the screen shows the girl’s parents living in China. The contrast between two space indicates the time zone differences, which separates the girl from her family.
There are two “fighting” levels in the game which represents the culture shock of food and language respectively.
Level 1: Chopsticks VS. Western Food
The first level represents the culture shock of Chinese and Western food. The big pizza as the fighting object is a symbol of Western food. When the player approaches the big pizza, it will pop up burgers and fries. Burgers and fries will not harm the character, but they will make the player feel overwhelming, which implies the metaphor of the multicultural experience. The attacking weapon that the player holds is chopsticks, which represents a symbol of Chinese food culture. The player can click key “K” to eliminate the burgers and fries and attack the big pizza. The main goal of this level is beating the pizza until it dies.
Level 2: Chinese VS. English
The second level represents the culture shock of language. When the player approaches the book, it will pop up English letters to inhibit players to approach it. The attacking weapon that the player holds is Chinese words. The Chinese words represent in the game is the Chinese translation of “UC Davis”. The main goal of this level is beating the book until it dies.
